Background of the study
Phonetic training, which focuses on improving speech sound production through targeted instruction, is critical in language revitalization efforts. Among the Tiv people, whose language faces pressure from dominant languages and urbanization, structured phonetic training can play a pivotal role in preserving linguistic identity (Okoro, 2023). This study appraises the impact of phonetic training on the revitalization of the Tiv language by examining its effect on pronunciation accuracy, speech clarity, and overall language proficiency. Through acoustic analysis and training intervention assessments, the research documents changes in phonetic output before and after phonetic training programs. The study also explores the sociocultural factors that influence the uptake and effectiveness of such training. By providing empirical evidence on the benefits of systematic phonetic instruction, the research aims to support language preservation initiatives and inform educational policies targeted at minority language communities (Ibrahim, 2024). Ultimately, the findings will contribute to improved language revitalization strategies that integrate modern training techniques with traditional language practices.
Statement of the problem
Despite various language revitalization initiatives among the Tiv, there remains a significant gap in phonetic proficiency, which undermines effective language transmission (Chinwe, 2023). Inadequate phonetic training contributes to persistent pronunciation errors, impeding language acquisition and fluent communication. The lack of structured phonetic programs limits the revitalization efforts and hampers the preservation of the Tiv language. This study aims to evaluate the role of phonetic training in addressing these issues, providing empirical data to support enhanced training methodologies for language revitalization.
